Furious Styles Crew: Breakin’ it down
Ruben Hernandez
Fresh off their October first-place win in the break-dancing Battle of the Year USA, the 10 members of Furious Styles Crew head to Germany to compete in the biggest breakin’ event in the world, Battle of the Year International on Oct. 18.
The BOTY brings in some of the best and most innovative B-Boy crews on the planet. This international contest is also a platform for B-Boys and Hip Hop culture, says House, or Edson Magaña, a leader of Furious Styles Crew.
“It’s like the Super Bowl of break-dancing,” House says. “It’s exciting to be dancing there at this stage of my career.”
After Germany, FSC returns home to host its 15th anniversary competition on Oct. 23-26 at the Event Center, 441 W. Madison, in downtown Phoenix.
The 15th anniversary downtown blow-out offers a whole lot to do for break-dancing aficionados. On Thursday, Oct. 23, there’s the official pre-party at the Blunt Club from 9 p.m.-2 a.m.
On Friday, Oct. 24, there’s the official opening night celebration at Stoudemire’s from 9 p.m.-2 a.m.
The after-parties happen at downtown’s Bar Smith on the nights of the main events – Saturday, Oct. 25, and Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Events Center.
The battle offers a $15,000 cash prize and other prizes. The competition categories include 10-man crew, 1-on-1 b-girl, 1-on-1 popping, 1-on-1 open style, and a Graff (graffiti painting) contest.
The anniversary event’s DJs include Element, Radar, Deeko, Senbad, Cutswell, and Petesalaz.
The break-dancing battle has been a big part of the dance form since its beginnings in the South Bronx of New York City in the 1970s. Basically, a battle is a mass challenge pitting one crew’s or person’s breakin’ skills against a competitor’s skills. The winner is the one the judges pick as the best.
Phoenix-based Furious Styles Crew was founded in 1993 by three pairs of brothers, Edson and Odin Magaña, Mike and John Rincon, and Mike and Adam Cruz. The crew became like a “family” that shared the goals of succeeding in dancing and life.
House wants the Valley to know that the 15th Anniversary Battle offers entertaining thrills for all ages and cultures.
“We got people coming from everywhere, from all walks of life,” says House, whose crew is primarily Latino. “It will be multiculturalism at its best.”
